Why Esteem?

“Self-esteem” is a psychological term that describes a person’s overall sense of personal value or self-worth. Self-esteem is comprised of your beliefs about yourself, such as your judgments about your own appearance, behavior, beliefs and emotions.

The development of self-esteem during childhood is a result of two interacting forces: 1) the child’s innate strengths and weaknesses, and 2) their interactions with parents, family and the social environment. In addition, very difficult early life experiences can affect a child’s development, beliefs and self-image.

Research has shown that low self-esteem is one of the strongest predictors of behavioral and emotional problems. In contrast to people with high self-esteem, people with low self-esteem are more likely to experience shyness, general unhappiness and loneliness. They are less likely to develop close friendships. Low self-esteem during adolescence has negative real-world consequences during adulthood, including damaging impacts on both physical and mental health. Childhood low self-esteem is a predictor for weight gain into adulthood in both men and women.

Research into the mind-body connection has also shown that both depressed mood and low self-esteem can amplify health-related restrictions and severity of symptoms, including pain. For example, in women with eating disorders body image dissatisfaction and the desire to be thin correlates with an increased sensitivity to pain.
